Now it’s time for a rant….

As many of you know, my company is currently involved in a hostile takeover by its largest shareholder.

When I started at Premier two years ago, our stock was trading at over $18.00 per share.  Friday, it closed at 76 cents.  It has been as low as 50 cents.  Needless to say, there have been some irate shareholders.  They have since ousted the Chairman and CEO and brought in an interim CEO to run the company.  When the #2 guy’s contract came up for renewal, they bid a fond farewell to him as well.

What bites is that I have watched some of my colleagues scratch and claw to get themselves into the limelight, shoving their collective noses so far up the interim CEO’s ass, I’m not sure how they can breathe.  This guy turns companies around for a living.  Do they not realize that he knows what they’re doing?  Do they think they will be promoted, or won’t lose their jobs, if they swallow?  COME ON!

Am I so naive that I think doing a good job, keeping my mouth shut and my nose clean, and playing nice in the sandbox  will help me keep my job?  I mean, my colleagues have always been guilty of back-stabbing, finger-pointing, throwing people under the proverbial bus, etc.  All I can hope for, in the end, is that the CEO sees who does a good job, and who’s been blowing smoke up his ass with all of their qualifications, AHEM, credentials, AHEM AHEM, and past hard work…OH GIVE ME A FREAKIN’ BREAK!

Hopefully, (a)  he sees the hard work of so many like myself and our dedication and loyalty to the company, and (b) he sees what’s going on with the brown-nosers and runs their collective asses out the door when the axe finally starts to fall.  Bitter?  You betcha!

Shame on all of them for behaving like this!

Coping with the loss of a dear friend

I lost a dear friend and colleague in March and spent three days in
Chicago at her funeral services.

Cathy was only 10 months older than me:  I turned 44 on February 22 and she would have been 45 on April 30.  Cathy and I were colleagues at Czarnowski.  We met back in 2003 and quickly became friends.

During a very rough time in my life–when I was estranged from my son–Cathy called to check on me all the time.  She provided guidance, direction, and at times, even a shoulder.  When I joined the Quick Weight Loss Center, she would call me every week, on the day of my weigh-in, just to see how I was doing and to find out how much weight had I lost.

We took a trip to Los Angeles in 2004.  She hated to drive in strange places, so I was her chauffeur during our trip.  Cathy had a very small frame, and I will always remember her sitting Indian-style in the front seat, curled up like a little kitten next to a fireplace, as I zipped in and out of LA traffic.  We talked about our families, gossiped about our co-workers and bitched about our bosses.  Even though her health was not good, she knew that I wanted to see the Hollywood sign and insisted that we find it.  It was hot in Hollywood that day, and she had to stop every block or so to rest.

At her visitation, her family displayed hundreds of pictures, chronicling her life.  Several pictures of our LA trip were included:

-        Johnny Depp’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that I helped her find

-        The picture that I took of her standing under the Hollywood & Vine street signs

-        Several pictures of the Hollywood sign, as seen through the thick LA smog

-        Grauman’s Chinese Theater

Because of her driving-in-strange-places phobia, I would go to the airport and pick her up anytime she came to Atlanta.  I would schlep her to and from the office, to and from her hotel, then back down to the airport.

I loved that woman.

When it was obvious that I would have to leave Czarnowski, Cathy supported my decision and offered her expertise to assist me in finding a new job.  We spoke often after I left, and remained close friends.

Her husband, Dennis, asked me if I would be a pall-bearer.  At first, I told him I couldn’t.  I just didn’t think I could do it.  I left the funeral home and got in to my rental car.  I sat there for a few minutes, reflecting on my conversation with Dennis.  I walked back into the funeral home and agreed to do it.  I’m glad I did.  After the funeral, I felt as if I got the opportunity to hand her off to God’s waiting arms.  What a feeling.

This is an excerpt from Cathy’s obituary.  It pretty much sums up everything:

”Cathy recently was faced with many health challenges. She kept herself motivated by her work as Director of Human Resources with Czarnowski Exhibit Services. Cathy’s courageous attitude and accomplishments toward her life, family and work touched many lives. We take consolation in knowing she lived life to the fullest and had a life filled with complete love. She was truly an angel sent from above and never will be forgotten.  Cathy will be greatly missed.”

Amen to that.  I miss you, Cathy.

Oh my goodness….people actually read my blog!

Whoda thunk it?  I finally found some tyme to update my blog today and while reviewing my past posts, I noticed that people are actually reading this thing…and commenting on it!

Thank you.

Strangers who don’t know me and I don’t know them, are reading my blog.  How extraordinary!  I only hope they will accept my apology for not responding individually to all of the kind and thoughtful comments.

I apologize.

A very good friend of mine told me this would happen, but I never thought it would (you were right, Ginnie).  I mean, I consider this to be a place for me to unload my feelings, ideas, and anything else I need to get down on paper.  The thought of complete strangers taking time to read it, and actually comment on it….well, it’s kind of humbling.

More to come…I still need to post my “March”.  I want to do it in a couple different posts, as I lost a very dear friend to cancer last month and I want to devote one post solely to her.  I miss you, Cathy.

It’s snowing in Atlanta and stupid people are out in full force!!

Snow in Altanta, Georgia, makes people stupid.

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that it has only snowed about an inch where I live and already, at 4:49pm, stupid people are closing schools for tomorrow.

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that store shelves are already empty from stupid people thinking they need to buy milk and bread in case they get snowed in.  Do they not watch the news?

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that you don’t even have to watch the news to know it’s snowing.  All you have to do in Atlanta is turn on your television.  Every news station on every channel is covering the snow, planting stupid people on every corner of metro Atlanta, just to tell us that it’s snowing outside.

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that stupid people in their cars are running into each other on the highways from stupid people who think that just because you can drive 80mph on dry roads, you can do it on wet and slick ones.

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that from the desk in my home office, I can see the corner of Ashood Way and Glendale Drive.  It’s amazing how many stupid people blast up to the stop sign, then slam on their brakes and slide through it.

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that stupid news station managers are calling 2-3″ of snow “Blizzard ‘09″.  Puh-leeze!

By “makes people stupid”, I mean that even though Atlanta is made of of 90% stupid northern transplants, they still freak out at the first mention of snow.

And finally….By “makes people stupid”, I wonder how many stupid people are at the car wash right now?  Hmmm…..

January and February Update

January was so busy for me…four trips.  I’ve been on one trip this month, but I’ve spent a LOT of time at our venues that are currently running in Atlanta.  I haven’t had much time to update my blog.  Sorry.

The last time I updated was January 3.  I left for Nashville TN on January 4.  My boss and I drove there in Tink, my new Hummer.  It is such a comfortable vehicle.  It got 18 MPG going there and back.  Not too bad for a Hummer, I guess.  We had to take a physical inventory of all of our retail merchandise currently warehoused there.  We were there for three days and stayed at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel.  It was really nice:  3.5 star for $55/night.  One more recommendation:  Pancake Pantry near Vanderbilt.  OH MY GAWD!

We drove back to Atlanta on January 6 and I had to leave for San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 8.  I had to go there to do a site evaluation and also deal with some managerial issues we were having.  The trip was great, and just like the first time I was there, the weather was consistently in the 80’s and sunny.  Sorry I don’t have any pictures.  When I go to San Juan, I don’t rent a car, so the only pictures I could snap would be from a speeding taxi…zipping in and out of San Juan traffic while I sit in the back praying that I arrive alive.  My San Juan recommendations:  (1)  Sheraton Old San Juan on Brumbaugh Street in Old San Juan.  It’s right across the street from the cruiseship docks and houses a casino for all you gamblers, and (2) The Chicago Burger Company.  YUM.  I flew back home on January 11 and the Atlanta temperatures were in the teens, which was a far cry from the 80’s I had just experienced.

We closed our Bodies exhibition in Honolulu on January 18, so on January 17, me and Jimmy headed for Oahu.  I typically only go to a closing for 4 days, but my boss let me take a few extra days for a vacation, so we enjoyed paradise for eight days.  We arrived in Honolulu late on Saturday, January 17.  By the time we got a car and checked in the hotel, it was almost midnight.  On Sunday the 18th, I went to the venue.  Since it was the last day of the exhibition, and my management staff there had done most of the packing and move preparation, there wasn’t much for me to do.  Since we had rented a convertible, we decided to get in it and just drive around the island.

We headed East on H-1 and our first stop was a park at the North end of Waikiki Beach:

We continued to head East and happened across [what we now know] was Diamond Head Beach:

We continued East, which eventually headed North and then West (since we were driving around an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  We made a turn to the South and ended up at Pearl Harbor:

I don’t know how we did it, but after Pearl Harbor, we ended up at the Dole Plantation:

We both thought pineapples grew on tall trees, like coconuts, but they actually grow on small bushes about 2′ tall.

We rode the train around the plantation, watched a demonstration on how to cut a pineapple, and ate some pineapple ice cream.  YUMMY!

After the Dole Plantation, we went to the North Shore and took some awesome wave pictures!  What a beautiful area of Oahu:

On Monday,  Tuesday, and Wednesday, I worked at the venue while Jimmy walked around the Waikiki area of Honolulu. and hung out at the hotel pool.  My crew finally moved the last fixture out of the exhibition space and cleaned it up…leaving Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to just me and Jimmy.  We checked out of the hotel Saturday morning, the 24th.  Our flight wasn’t until 11pm, and we bought tickets to a whale watching cruise, so we hopped in the convertible and drove to Pier 34.

Sidebar:  The Captain of the cruiseship was Hottie McHot!

We went out into the Pacific Ocean and saw SEVERAL whales.  I took almost 200 pictures, trying to catch a whale, but by the time I got the pictures snapped, they were gone.  In this pic, you can see the splash after one went back into the water:

After the cruise, we wanted to see Diamond Head before heading to the airport.  I also had to get some sand for a good friend who collects it (hey Jessica), so we headed to the Diamond Head Beach.

Me stealing sand:

…and watching a sunset from Waikiki…all in one evening:

As I mentioned before, our flight left Honolulu around 11pm, heading for Los Angeles.  From LAX, Jimmy set out for home in Atlanta and I headed to Indianapolis for that venue’s closing on January 25.  Temperatures in Hawaii were consistently in the 80’s.  When I arrived in Indianapolis one day later, the temperature was 8 degrees.

As usual, I was dressed in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.  In fact, the attire in the picture above of me getting Jessica’s sand is the same attire I was wearing when I stepped off the plane in Indianapolis.  The following Tuesday, I believe that would have been January 27, it snowed 12″ overnight:

Needless to say, I was happy to leave Indianapolis and head for home on Thursday, January 29.  Two days later, on Saturday, I found out I was being sent to San Juan again in a couple days.  On Monday, February 2, I headed back to San Juan, Puerto Rico.  This time, a management “change” had to happen.

While I sat in the ATL airport awaiting my departure to San Juan, I noticed ex-Atlanta Braves catcher, Javy Lopez, waiting to board my flight.  When I boarded the plane, he was already seated in Business Class, so I asked him for a picture for my son.  LOL…yeah, right, for my son:

When I got to San Juan, I made the management “change”, if you know what I mean, and welcomed the new management with a lunch at Senor Frogs:

I left San Juan on Febuary 4 and headed back home.  Whew!  What a busy beginning to 2009!

Good Bye to “Tammy Faye” and Hello to “Tink”

For those who don’t know, “Tammy Faye” was what I named my 2006 Cadillac CTS.  It came to me right after I got her and I sprayed rim cleaner on the wheels.  A steady stream of wet, black, brake dust ran off the tires and onto the driveway, so I immediately realized what I would call her:  “Tammy Faye”.

Anywhooo, about two months ago, I got “car fever” and began looking at new vehicles.  I knew I wanted either an Infiniti M35/45 or an SUV.  The Infinitis start in the mid to upper $40’s, and run as much as $60K, which I just can’t afford, so I started looking at SUV’s.  Do you know how much those things cost?  I couldn’t afford one of them either…or so I thought.

One day, I was looking at Carmax’s website and searched by “SUV”.  I saw a 2006 yellow Hummer H3 and really liked the look.  The more pictures I looked at, the more I liked it.  I started doing some research on H3s and decided that, except for not getting great gas mileage, it was exactly what I wanted!

A little more research revealed that General Motors was offering insane rebates in addition to their ”Red Tag Price”, so I started sending emails to dealerships.  Since my credit is excellent, I wasn’t worried about financing.  I received an email from Capital Cadillac Hummer in Marietta GA.  The email was one of those no-pressure, let us know when you’re ready to buy, emails.  It stood out from the others because it’s unbelievable how pressuring dealerships can be.  Shame on all of them.

One thing led to another, and bada-bing, bada-boom, I went to visit them this past Tuesday, 12/30/08.  I looked at, drove, and bought a black 2009 Hummer H3:

With the red-tag price and rebates, I got $10,000 off the MSRP.  I didn’t get what I wanted as a trade-in for Tammy Faye, but we still put together a good deal that gave them a profit and left me feeling good about the whole thing.  All in all, I didn’t feel a bit of pressure…kinda odd for a car dealership, huh?

Anyway, next came naming the Hummer.  Since it’s such a butch-looking vehicle (good thing your truck’s butch, Alice), I had to think of a really butch name for her.  Consequently, I named her “Tink”.  Anyone who watches Sordid Lives: The Series, knows who “Tink” is.  For those of you who don’t watch SL:TS, “Tink” is an ultra-butch lesbian stage manager on the show.  Once I considered naming my new Hummer “Tink”, it just seemed like the perfect name for her.  Jimmy just rolled his eyes at me and Josh was appalled.  How dare I name such a butch vehicle, “Tink”.  LMAO!

I bought some side steps and luggage rails off eBay.  Both were new and about 1/5 of what the dealership wanted.  I will post a couple more pics once I receive and install them.

Oh yeah, I finally confirmed my travel plans for January:

            January 4-6, Nashville TN
            January 8-11, San Juan PR
            January 17-24, Honolulu HI
            January 25-29, Indianapolis IN

Updates and pictures to follow….

Y’all take care.

January ‘09 Travel Plans

So far, I have booked two trips for January.  Our Honolulu exhibition closes on January 18 and our Indianapolis exhibition closes on January 25.

Jimmy’s going to Honolulu with me this time.  We leave Atlanta at 2:35pm on Saturday, the 17th.  We have a stop in Los Angeles and get in to Honolulu at 9:50pm (that’s 4am Easterm Time).  We leave Honolulu at 11:20pm on Saturday, the 24th, and arrive in Los Angeles Sunday morning at 6:40am.  Our planes split and Jimmy heads to Atlanta while I head to Minneapolis and then on to Indianapolis.

When I went to Honolulu in June for the exhibition opening, my manager at the time wouldn’t allow me to take any extra time for myself.  This time, I’ll be taking a few extra days to see the island.  Everyone should work for my VP.  He’s great.  I should have plenty of time to take some nice pictures this time, too.

There is a con, though:  When I pack for this trip, I have to pack clothes for the 80’s and sun in Honolulu, then the teens, snow and ice in Indianapolis.

I’ll be sure to update you all when I return, and post some pictures.  I’ll even take a few of the snow and ice in Indy.

Until then, take care.

Ahhhhh….Christmas is Over

I didn’t know how much traveling I would be doing in December, so I started planning and preparing for Christmas in mid-November.  All that work led up to [basically] two days of family, friends and food.  Then it was all over.  POOF!

On Saturday the 13th, me, Jimmy and Josh went to holiday parties at two different friend’s homes.  What a late night!  Jimmy and I hadn’t been out late in ages.  We found out that we just can’t hang with the youngins’ anymore.  Thank you, Ruben & Pablo and Carmen & June for two great parties.

We had the Atlanta venue party Monday night, the 22nd.  There was a TON of food.  I brought my signature Turtle Cheesecake and Reeses Peanut Butter Cheesecake.  We had about 45-50 employees there.  Man, the food…..I ate like it was my last meal.  Local management did a great job of stretching their budget.

Me, Jimmy, and Josh had our gift exchange Tuesday morning because Jimmy was leaving for his parents’ house in Rock Hill, South Carolina, later that morning.  Jimmy got me a 160GB iPod for all my music and movies.  I really wanted one to pass my time when I am flying.  For over a month, Josh had been converting all of my movies, TV series and music, and loaded it all onto the iPod.  Josh got me a docking stereo and several other accessories for my iPod.  I got a portable XM Radio for Jimmy and a portable printer for Josh to use with his laptop.

On Christmas Eve morning, I invited to breakfast those who could come for sausage and french toast.  I got up around 5am to start my day and I had about a dozen people for breakfast.  Later in the day, the rest of the family came, and I ended up with 27 people at the house.  I have five siblings and four of them were able to make it with their families.  Unfortunately, Karen was unable to come down from Illnois, but Debbie was able to make it from Tucson, Arizona with her children and new beau.

The appetizer menu consisted of sausage balls, meatballs, cocktail weiners, bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapenos, bacon-wrapped stuffed mushrooms, a vegetable tray w/ dip, chips and salsa, crab dip w/ crackers, spinach and ham pinwheels, cheese balls w/ crackers, pumpernickel bread bowl w/ dip, sesame chicken wings, bruschetta, cathedral fudge, coconut squares and a big ole’ crock pot of hot apple cider.

The gift exchange happened around 6pm.  Good Lord, Have Mercy!  What a great time!  For all the preparation and work that went into it, I just love having everyone over to the house with good food and good company.  My family is so big, we don’t have too many opportunities to get everyone together.  Even this time, we were missing one, but we still made the best of it and had a great time.

After everyone left, I cleaned up the house, loaded the dishwasher, vacuumed, and took out the trash.  My nephew, Jimmie, stayed the night with Josh, so I left them downstairs around 10pm, showered, and poured myself into bed.  I turned the TV on and don’t even remember watching the first commercial.  I was tired, to say the least.

We went to Mom’s for Christmas Day.  With the exception of Karen, we all were together again for a day of playing cards.  Mom, et al, made a wonderful dinner!  Since Jimmy had to work Friday, he came home late on Christmas Day.  His mother sent him home with all her meal’s leftovers and a deep freeze full of frozen food.

All in all….I have one of the most dysfunctional families there is.  We may argue and bicker and gossip about each other when they aren’t around, BUT…I wouldn’t want them any other way and I love them all.

Holiday Decorating at JM3.

First, the JM3 comes from our names, Jerry Miller, Jimmy Martin, and Josh Miller.  Get it?

The house is ready for Christmas.  I was so busy last December we didn’t decorate anything.  No cooking, no baking, no Christmas trees, no stockings…nothing.
This year it’s another story.        :-)         Here are some pictures.

We put up four Christmas trees this year.  None of the pictures do them justice, though.  Cameras never seem to catch the beauty of Christmas trees.  This one is in the living room.  It’s kind of a tribute to a very close and dear friend that we lost in 2007 to AIDS.  Every year, he decorated his tree and it looked like something you’d see at Biltmore…very elaborate and just absolutely beautiful.  This year, we decided to model our tree after his and hopefully have a little bit of him here with us during the holidays.

What’s a Christmas living room without a decorated fireplace & mantle?

Stockings for Jerry, Jimmy, Josh, Sebastian and Isabelle.
The stocking hooks are attached to ceramic railroad cars…
…appropriate since Jimmy works for the railroad.

These two trees are smaller, 4 ft ones.
They are on either side of the china cabinet in the dining room.

…and you know I had to get the table ready for company…

This tree is in the dormer of the upstairs bonus room.
It’s the only one that can be seen from the street.
…Another beautiful tree that the camera did not do justice.

Except for my Mom, I’m done with my shopping.  I’m having my family over for Christmas Eve.  I’ve counted 28 people so far w/ probably a few more strays, vagabonds, inlaws and outlaws.  You know I love to cook, so the kitchen’s gonna get a hell of a workout.  I have quite a spread planned.  Christmas Eve in my family is typically a full day of appetizers, then we exchange gifts late in the evening.  Christmas Day is typically at my Mom’s house, with the big full Christmas Dinner.

As always, Jimmy will be going home to South Carolina for the holidays this year, so the five of us (me, Jimmy, Josh, Sebastian, Isabelle) will celebrate our Christmas before he leaves.

2007 & 2008 Holiday Letter

For those of you who have received my Holiday Letter in the past, you have already seen that this year, I decided to post it here and send Christmas cards to everyone instead.  Since I didn’t send a letter to anyone last year, I guess I need to get some of you up-to-date on what has happened in our lives during 2007 and 2008.

Josh turned 16 in February 2007, so I bought him a car.  He found a 1995 Nissan Maxima on autotrader.com and I got it for him.  He has had it almost 2 years now with no tickets or accidents…knock knock.  He will be 18 in a couple months and then graduating from High School in May.  Eighteen years have just flown by!  He has grown up to be such a fine young man and I am so unbelievably proud of him.

In 2007, we bought new vinyl double-pane windows for the house.  We hired a sub to do the window installation.  There were 22 windows to change out.  What an improvement–the look, the sound barrier, and definitely the change in heating and cooling costs.  After the windows were in, we decided to purchase wood flooring for the house.  We installed it ourselves (well, I must admit, Jimmy and Josh installed about 95% of it).  Our house is 2600 sq ft (3000 w/ the garage).  We replaced all of the floors except in the sunroom and the three bathrooms.  We even wood-floored both staircases.

One major event in 2007 was that I changed jobs.  After 4 years as Controller and Human Resources Coordinator at my previous employer, I chose to leave due to personality conflicts with the corporate Director of Finance and the local Assistant General Manager.  I tend to think of myself as a self-starter and just couldn’t handle being micro-managed by the CDOF any longer.  I also tend to treat everyone the same and pride myself in my managerial abilities.  This sparked the conflict with the AGM.  Neither of them was going anywhere, and nothing was going to be done to change their behaviors, so I was the one who had to leave.

I am now the Director of Operations at Premier Exhibitions, a producer of touring exhibitions.  I oversee the operations of various venues.  Among the company’s repertoire are:

    Bodies…The Exhibition
    Bodies Revealed
    Our Body:  The Universe Within
    Titanic:  The Artifact Exhibition
    Titanic Aquatic
    Dialog in the Dark
    Star Trek the Exhibition

The job has sent me all over the United States:  Durham, NC;  Branson, MO;  Ft. Lauderdale, FL;  Boston, MA;  Hartford, CT;  Sacramento, CA;  Wichita, KS;  Atlantic City, NJ;  Honolulu, HI;  Indianapolis, IN;  Cincinnati, OH;  Las Vegas, NV;  and Nashville, TN.  I have also been to a few international destinations:  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Panama City, Panama; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In ‘07 & ‘08, Jimmy’s work at Norfolk Southern took him to Palatka, FL;  Norfolk, VA;  and Detroit, MI.  He will have 11 years in very soon.  He also accompanied me on trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City.  During the trip to A/C, I actually got the country-boy to NYC for a whole day.  Imagine that!  He’s even ready to go back sometime and spend more than one day.  A great time was had by both.

We haven’t been able to take a vacation since I changed jobs, so I don’t have any updates on that front.  In the past two years, Jimmy has gone to Biloxi several times to gamble.  We still have a mortgage payment, so you can deduce that he has not hit “the big one” yet.

Josh accompanied me on trips to Indianapolis and Hartford.  During one of my many trips to Hartford, he and I spent 1.5 days in NYC.  A great time was had by both.  Are you seeing a pattern here?  For Father’s Day 2007, Josh and I went to Orlando and Miami for an extended weekend.  We didn’t get to go anywhere for Father’s Day 2008, so that’s why we went to NYC a little later in the year.

Sebastian and Isabelle are as precious as ever.  They are definitely our babies and are treated as such.  They are so spoiled.

I think that’s about everything.  If not, I’ll post another blog entry later.

Take care, our dear friends and family.  We love you all and we wish you a wonderful holiday and a happy and prosperous 2009!!!!!!!!!!
